Instruments to Support Illumina Library Preparation (New E-gel system for fragment sizing)

Support instruments for Illumina library preparation.

  • Biodisruptor. As many of you know, within the Genomics Core, we have a Biodisruptor which is a very nice sonicator for DNA Shearing for library prep.
  • Hydroshear. The Genomics also houses a Hydroshear device which is suitable for the shearing of DNA for larger fragment sizes.
  • NEW! Rapid size selection of amplified DNA.  Our newest acquisition is the Invitrogen E-Gel system. The system runs a 2% precast gel that contains SYBR Green for real-time detection and is  designed for size selection of desired fragments. The system allows the user to visualize the DNA as it is running by long wavelength UV and to capture the fragments of desired size in a receiver well in as little as 15ul volume. It takes less than 30min to size select a fragment and multiple sizes can be selected from a single lane. You can even reverse the migration if you overshoot the receiver well. It also works well for re-purifying libraries to remove primer dimers. If it sounds intriguing, stop by and check it out. We would like to get feedback on the usefulness of the device.

All of these instruments are available for a modest recharge.
